Heating & Air Conditioning

One-Year Course

Students learn the fundamentals of air conditioning, refrigeration, heating and piping principles for residential and commercial applications. Students explore energy efficiency, green technology, sustainable and renewable energy systems. Students read blueprints, drawings, and schematics and understand building codes for the installation of heating and cooling systems. Students apply their knowledge by installing, servicing and troubleshooting heating, air conditioning and refrigeration units that utilize state of the art, green technologies.

With Monroe Community College (MCC)

  • HVA 101: Basic Refrigeration Theory (3 credits)

Applied Academics

Literacy for Technical Subjects
Within each unit, students will be expected to:

  • Read and understand complex texts
  • Use evidence to respond to text through classroom discussion and written responses
  • Understand and apply academic and content vocabulary, within knowledge and performance activities
  • Synthesize information from texts and other sources, through written responses

Mathematics
Students will be expected to:

  • Use algebraic and geometric principles to understand and apply heating and air conditioning concepts
  • Use cost structures to develop estimates
  • Read and interpret blueprints when working installation projects

Science
Students will be expected to:

  • Apply principles of physics as it relates to basic heating and air conditioning technology
  • Demonstrate an understanding of heat transfer, pressures and temperatures as it relates to heating and cooling systems

Items to Consider:

  • Students are required to follow safety procedures and practice safe work habits at all times

Employment Opportunities

  • Entry level positions in the heating and air conditioning field

Further Educational Opportunities

  • Two-year programs within Building Trades and four-year programs in related Engineering Technologies
  • Apprenticeship programs through the local Plumbers and Steamfitters, Pipefitters, Boilermakers and Sheet Metal Workers Unions

Industry Based Exam

  • NOCTI (written and practical)

Industry Certifications

  • H.E.A.T. (Home Energy Analyst & Technician certification via NYSERDA)
  • Energy Star Certification
  • NCCER (various modules)
  • OSHA Construction Safety Course (10-hour)
  • Students are prepared for and have the opportunity to sit for the EPA Certification
