The National Organization for Women Foundation (“NOW Foundation”) is a 501(c) (3) organization devoted to achieving full equality for women through education and litigation.
The Foundation focuses on a broad range of women’s rights issues, including economic justice, pay equity, racial discrimination, women’s health and body image, women with disabilities, reproductive rights and justice, family law, marriage and family formation rights of same-sex couples, representation of women in the media, and global feminist issues.
The NOW Foundation is affiliated with the National Organization for Women, the largest feminist grassroots organization in the U.S., with hundreds of chapters in all 50 states and the District of Columbia and hundreds of thousands of contributing members and supporters.
NOW Foundation carries out a variety of public education and litigation projects. Included among those – and perhaps the best known – is our Love Your Body Campaign aimed at young women. A prominent aspect of this campaign is the poster contest drawing hundreds of entries each year, with prizes in four categories awarded. The LYB Campaign encourages class discussions about body image and healthy living as well as campus actions that draw attention to the commercial objectification of women’s bodies and the promotion of unhealthy products and practices.
Every day, in so many ways, the beauty industry (and the media in general) tell women and girls that being admired, envied and desired based on their looks is a primary function of true womanhood. The beauty template women are expected to follow is extremely narrow, unrealistic and frequently hazardous to their health. The Love Your Body campaign challenges the message that a woman’s value is best measured through her willingness and ability to embody current beauty standards.
The National Organization for Women Foundation hosts an annual poster contest to celebrate the Love Your Body Campaign (however, a contest was not held in 2018). The winning posters are featured on the website and used to promote Love Your Body events.
Before submitting posters to the contest, please look at past winners
and familiarize yourself with the campaign. Winning posters will be
chosen based on how well they counteract the media’s use of narrow,
unrealistic, negative images of women and/or challenge advertisers that
profit from women’s dissatisfaction with their bodies.
Posters should be graphically attractive and use a dynamic message. We
especially look for images that demonstrate beauty is not limited by
body size, body type, ethnicity, age or physical appearance. The winning
posters will be displayed in schools and other public settings, so
please consider this when designing your poster.
