  3. Media Dept. Update:

  1. Attached is an updated listing of Rochester Regional Library Council workshops. RRLC is also looking for ideas for the School Librarian Summer School program they do every year. If you have ideas or suggestions, please let RRLC or Jim Belair know.

  1. Attached is an outstanding poster Karen Mitchell created that highlights some of the instructional uses of Follett Destiny. Please feel free to post and share!

  2. Michele Pava from East Middle School (West Seneca School District) <> is looking to collect lesson plans (in any form) to use in a workshop at the Global Citizenship Collaborative Conference being held in Buffalo on November 2nd, 2012. This conference focuses on addressing global issues in the K-12 classroom, with pre-service teachers, and beyond. This particular workshop seeks to celebrate and share the global issues you are already teaching in your library and classroom. Michele would love to sing the praises of the teachers and librarians who have developed lessons that bring the world to your students, from kindergarten to high school. Lessons about diversity, cultures, language, current immigration issues, religious tolerance, anything that exposes your students to the world beyond their neighborhood are welcome. Student exemplars would be highly desirable, though not essential.

  3. Reminder, submissions are being sought for the NY State EMTA Media Literacy Grant: Only schools in NY can apply for this grant!

8. Monroe #1 BOCES is hosting Stephen Abram on April 2. The topic of his workshop is eBooks and how we can adapt to using them. Stephen Abram is a veteran library watcher and strategic technologist and library futurist. In this session he shares his perspectives on these issues, challenges, and opportunities. Steven is the Past-President of the Canadian Library Association and is currently the Vice President for Strategic Partnerships and Markets for Cengage Learning (Gale). Monroe #1 is holding a few spaces for us to attend. If you are interested, please contact Jim Belair. SPACE IS LIMITIED!!! Attached is a flyer on this workshop.

9. From Joanne Shawhan at State Ed: Updated guidance information on teacher/principal evaluations based on the agreement announced three weeks ago to resolve the NYSUT-SED litigation has now been posted at . Please note that the legislation to enact that agreement has yet to be approved and regulations still need to be adopted. If you have questions, send them to

10. Judy Marsh, my counterpart from WFL BOCES, shared this link from Iowa State University regarding Student Learning Objects:

11. High School to College: Smoothing the Transition, a full-day seminar to be held at the Roycroft Inn, 40 South Grove Street, East Aurora, NY. Instructors at the college level expect students to be able to think and read critically, to be able to garner information from varied research sources, and to be able to correctly cite these sources within their written work. The set of skills known as information literacy are vital to successfully implementing these tasks in both college and high school. However, to achieve academic success demands, it must be realized that the skills must be constantly reinforced within the curricula. Therefore, instructors must be mindful of the skills and collaborate with the IL instructors to find ways to embed the skills in the curricula.

12. Karen Mitchell shared a Wiki by Middle School Librarian Gwyneth Jones: Lots of library and instructional technology items are found on this page.

13. The BOCES SLS team is working on Professional Development ideas and topics for the 2012-2013 school year. If you have any ideas or suggestions please let Jim Belair know.
