About the School Library System |
 |
In today’s information society, school library systems and school libraries are an essential educational component in providing resources and services to meet diverse student learning needs. The Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES School Library System is part of a statewide network of library systems supporting partnerships between libraries to promote equity access to quality library service.
Prior to 1979, school libraries were isolated from a growing statewide network of resource sharing. From 1979 to 1984, the Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES School Library System, as 1 of 12 pilots in the State, demonstrated how cooperation among school libraries and collaboration with other types of libraries improved access to information for students and teachers. In 1984, the State Legislature authorized the establishment of school library systems to provide library services to school libraries and the education community they serve. Today, school library systems continue to have a leadership role in providing library services to schools throughout the State.
The Monroe 2 Orleans BOCES School Library System is committed to the development, delivery, and promotion of quality library services to all member school libraries. As part of its commitment, the school library system provides leadership and support to school library media programs through professional development, resource sharing, and technology support. In recognition of the impact of strong school library media programs on student academic achievement, the system strives to support school librarians in preparing students to be able to locate, evaluate and use information successfully. With the amount of information dramatically growing each year, the importance and need for information literacy skills become more and more evident.
School library systems, through partnerships, assist member libraries in meeting the challenges of an information age. While the need for information may exceed an individual school library’s collection, systems are able to expand access to resources by participation in a network of libraries. Working with members, the school library system assists libraries in becoming full participants in a developing State and national information infrastructure. By collaborative and cooperative efforts the rich resources of libraries in New York State become accessible, giving true meaning to the concept of a library without walls.
