Early Childhood Education: One Year Course

Students in Early Childhood Education develop skills to work with young children of varying abilities and backgrounds.  Students study child development including social, emotional, physical and cognitive growth.  Guidance, safety, health and professionalism are also covered.  Students work in an integrated pre-school program with typically developing and special education three and four-year old children.

 

Units of Study:

·        Safety, Health and Learning Environment

·        Careers

·        Universal Foundation Skills

·        Observation and Human Development

·        Cognitive, Communication, & Creative Development

·        Guidance, Self-Concept & Social Development

 

Dual Credit: with Monroe Community College

·         ECE 150: Exp Early Childhood Education - 3 credits

·         ECE 151: Dev Skills Young Children - 3 credits

 

Applied Academics:

Technical Literacy

Students will be expected to:

·         Participate in technical reading and writing assignments

·         Listen reflectively, paraphrase and summarize

·         Use a combination of techniques to research, extract, and synthesize information in writing lesson plans targeted for use in an early childhood setting

·         Apply research and reading comprehension skills to major research/presentation project

Mathematics

Students will be expected to:

·        Apply elementary math concepts to prepare developmentally appropriate lesson plans

 

Items to Consider:

·        Students are required to follow safety procedures and practice safe work habits at all times

·        Students must be juniors or seniors to enroll in Early Childhood Education

·        Ability to communicate effectively in an early childhood setting

·        Students are expected to act as role models for preschoolers

·        Students should be able to work both individually and as a team member

 

Employment Opportunities: Entry level positions in day care, after-school or recreation

 

Further Educational Opportunities: Human service, elementary education, early childhood education and liberal arts programs

 

Industry Based Exam: NOCTI (written and practical)

 

Students are eligible for Regents Diploma with Career and Technical Education Endorsement.
