Congratulations to Westside Academy's Class of 2016

STEM reigns! Awesome bottle rockets

Science, technology, engineering and math came together with a lot of creativity to create a fleet of high-performance rockets.

Westside Academy wins its first Souper Bowl

To celebrate our own version of the Super Bowl, we collected dozens of cans of soup for the food bank at St. Theodore’s Church in Spencerport. In this cold weather, many needy families will appreciate hot soup donated by warm hearts.

Beware the Kraken!

There are exciting things going on in the art room with a cool transfer process that uses toner and special colored powders fired in the kiln to create amazing imagery on ceramic plates and mugs.

Have you ever wanted to visit Peru?

We're experimenting with virtual reality in Don Marcos' Spanish class. The 360-degree aspect of VR is a way to immerse ourselves in the sights, sounds, culture and language of Spanish-speaking countries like Peru, Costa Rica or the Dominican Republic. Student Brendan Verhagen says, “You just feel like you are there, in the middle of another country, where you have to speak and understand Spanish. The challenges you face and the conversations you have while there are more real and immediate than just sitting in a classroom.”

Doing our part during the holidays

Westside Academy bell ringers spread the holiday spirit among shoppers at our local Tops Market.

Honoring our veterans

In the days before Veterans Day, we were busy creating thank-you cards for vets at the Veteran's Outreach Center, and a special poster for our November 10 guest speaker, Tim Dobbertin, a veteran and past-teacher here at Westside. Mr. Dobbertin shared the story of how he found his own path in life, along with confidence and life skills, through his time in the service of our country. (Mr. Dobbertin is currently the Assistant Superintendent for Instructional Programs at BOCES 2.)

We also took a moment to honor our own Westside Academy veteran, phys ed teacher Ms. Kuhlkin.

Scenes from Red Ribbon Week at Westside

We are all too awesome, too talented, too loving, too amazing to waste any part of ourselves on drugs.

Together against bullying; United for kindness

We created this Chain of Unity to celebrate what makes us special. Many thanks to our guest speaker from Gay Alliance who was here on October 21 to help us promote acceptance, kindness and anti-bullying.

Congrats to Mr. Carpenter for his Copy Art show at Brockport - go see it!

"The Immovable Camera: Copy Art in the Bay Area 1980-1984," co-curated by our own Mr. Carpenter, celebrates the work of pioneering imagemakers using Xerox 6500 color copiers. It opens at The College in Brockport Tower Fine Arts Center on October 27 and runs through December 11.

Talent and passion at Westside

Artistic vision that takes your breath away. Our young artists are exploring new media; pushing their talents to create intensely beautiful images (and even deeply personal music) that keep us off-balance and make us look at the world in new ways.
