Career Day - Starting the search for a future

Students from BOCES 2 programs got a glimpse into some of the opportunities that await them, at the second-annual Exceptional Children Career Planning Services’ Career Day. The day-long event was open to students of all ages and grades, from middle school to transition. It brought them together with representatives from a number of career fields. They had the chance to ask questions and learn about what qualities, training and experience employers are looking for.

Volunteer professionals included Angel Barclay (retail management) and Yahzmin Little (human services) — both recent graduates of BOCES 2 Alternative High School. Kevin Frank (machining), Dan Guarino (welding), Tim Irish (automotive) and Frank Rivera (food services) were also on hand, along with Dan Blumerick and Michelle Baretela from BOCES 2 Career and Workforce Development.

Groups of interested students from the Alternative High School, the Career Exploration Center, the Career Skills Center, the Therapeutic Day Program (TDP), Ridgecrest Academy and the Communication and Social Skills (CaSS) program took turns speaking with the experts.

Transition specialists Toria Frank and Karrie Freeman planned the low-key event to give students the chance to make connections, to learn how to speak to potential employers and to get tips on how to research different jobs and find continuing assistance.
