The Monroe County Legislature honored the work of BOCES 2 Career and Technical Education SkillsUSA students by proclaiming Feb. 2-8, 2025 as SkillsUSA Week in Monroe County. This proclamation highlights the contributions of SkillsUSA, a national organization that helps students in CTE programs develop skills, leadership and professionalism in preparation for careers.
SkillsUSA student representatives Savannah Wehner (Medical Laboratory Assistant and Phlebotomy) and Erin Newton (Digital and Visual Communication) spoke to the legislature about the importance of SkillsUSA Week. They illustrated the impact the organization has by working to close the skills gap and confront workforce challenges. Wehner described that the organization provides lessons in leadership, teamwork and character development, while reinforcing work ethics, communication skills and pride in quality work.
“By supporting SkillsUSA, we’re not only investing in an organization, we’re investing in the future of our community, economy and nation,” added Newton. “We’re sure the nation is in good hands because it is in skilled hands.”
The proclamation aligned with SkillsUSA's annual week-long celebration, which included Advocacy Day.
