Here are a few of the most frequently asked questions when districts consider using our School Investigator Service:

Q: I have a potential student truancy/residency matter and need an investigation. How do I begin the process?

To begin an investigation, or to determine if an investigation is warranted, contact the service’s Senior School Investigator Jeff Gerber at [email protected] or the Labor Relations Office Administrative Assistant at 352-2604.

Q: Do I need to be a participant of the Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES, Labor Relations Service to utilize the School Investigator/Residency Service?

No. However, utilizing this service does require a completed cross-contract for services (non-component districts) or a request for additional services (component districts) on file for each school year the service is utilized. This document will be circulated for signature at the initiation of the first investigation for the year, but the circulation process does not hinder the start of any investigation.

Q: What is the cost of this service?

This service is billed per usage at an hourly rate set annually, plus mileage, and clerical and administration fees. The current 2023-24 hourly rate is $66.00. This charge is aidable for districts that qualify for BOCES aid.

Q: How long will a residency investigation take?

There are numerous Commissioner decisions that hold a two-week surveillance is necessary for the district to meet its burden of proof that the family is not a resident. However, each residency investigation can be tailored to fit the district’s needs.

Q: What other services does the School Investigator Service provide?

The Service also helps districts facilitate student school attendance. New York state law requires compulsory student attendance and a system for accounting for student school attendance throughout the day. The investigators act as a liaison between the school and family to communicate the laws surrounding attendance and the repercussions of truancy and assists in returning the student to school.
