English Language Learning

The Center for Workforce Development offers free programs to help adults improve their English. Adults must not have a US high school diploma and be at least 21 years old (or be at least 18 and live in a participating school district: Brockport, Churchville-Chili, Gates-Chili, Spencerport, Wheatland-Chili).

Foundations in English for Speakers of Other Languages 
Students will learn and practice English through reading, writing, listening, and speaking. They will learn essential communication skills, grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary through group, whole class, and individualized instruction. Students are expected to attend at least 80% of their scheduled class.

English for Work and Life (Intermediate/Advanced)
Students will learn and practice English through reading, writing, listening, and speaking, with a focus on life skills and preparing for work or post-secondary opportunities. They will learn intermediate communication skills, grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary through group, whole class, and individualized instruction. Students are expected to attend at least 80% of their scheduled class.

ESOL Distance Education for Adults (21 and older)
This distance learning option is designed for people who want to learn English but can't attend regular classes. You will receive online materials twice a month from your instructor. There is also an option for students to receive small group online tutoring. All students must take in person tests occasionally. Eligibility for the program is determined after a testing session during orientation.

Improve your English and prepare for a new career at the same time! The Supported Dual Enrollment program allows adult students enrolled in an ESOL program to enroll in a career training program at the same time, allowing them to be ready for a new career faster. With this innovative program, students prepare to enter the workplace with highly sought-after skills while at the same time acquiring the necessary language, reading, writing, and mathematical skills to be workplace-ready.
